Anaesthetist and Intensive Care Physician

Doctor Anwar Hussein is a senior anaesthetist and intensive care physician. His NHS practice is based at the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre where he is Clinical Director of Perioperative Medicine and leads a team of intensive care specialists and anaesthetists. His private practice is based at the Lister Hospital in London, St Anthony’s Hospital in Cheam (where he is Clinical Director of intensive care), and Parkside Hospital in Wimbledon.

Dr Hussein studied medicine at Oxford University where he also developed an interest in critical care medicine. This led to a PhD in acute lung injury and ARDS at the John Radcliffe Hospital, as well as postdoctoral fellowships at Vanderbilt University in the USA and McMaster University in Canada. After completing his research interests, he returned to clinical training in the UK and remains active in clinical anaesthesia, critical care and education.

Dr Hussein has a special interest in anaesthesia for high-risk surgery and perioperative care. This integrates individualised preoperative assessment and optimisation, postoperative care including acute pain medicine, as well as enhanced recovery programs. He has developed such programs both in the NHS and private practice.

Dr Hussein has served as Clinical Tutor as well as regional Clinical Lead for Quality Improvement of the Royal College of Anaesthetists. He is currently Secretary of the British Society of Orthopaedic Anaesthetists (BSOA).

During the current COVID-19 pandemic, Dr Hussein may be approached via telephone or video consultations for advice on acute pain control whilst awaiting any definitive surgery.
